Arrived back at home from Nepal safe and sound Monday-
Nepal is a beautiful country and the people are amazing, unfortunately the infrastructure is in a state of collapse- 6 hours of electricity per day with no set time as to when the power is on or off, daily life is hard- 80% of the population live on less than a dollar a day- The Maoist government coupled with the negative effects of global warming [no rain for months]are facing a massive challenge to get the country running on an even keel, tensions are high and there is a large police, national army/ maoist army presence in the streets, rebel factions are constantly kidnapping, shooting and looting in the Terai regions. Throw in an outbreak of bird flu on the India/Nepalese borders... plus the recent murder of a number of journalists.... and the fear that Tibeten refugees may be in for a very very hard time soon..... Yet somehow the people seem to cope.

Anyway, enough political rambling by me... Back to the photo business....
We are gradually working our way through the images [ there's a lot], from Holy men worshipping their Lord Shiva at Pashupatinath during the Shiva Ratri celebrations, elephants in the Terai district, Parahawking at Pokhara and street life in Kathmandu. Gail and I both created some good imagery but Billie- lee and Jimmy [our children] both armed with cameras really did pull out some fantastic shots from the chaos that engulfed us all, definitely pro- standard.
It was good to see them both getting in close to their subject matter and interacting rather than taking the easy option of using a telephoto zoom and losing that intimacy.[ believe me when I say that it takes some guts to do what they did at their tender age of 12 and 14].
Billie and Jimmy- I promise I will upload some of your images as soon as I get through editing my work... The work you accomplished with the animal centre and your street photography are full photo essays in their own right and deserve their own blog entry...
Anyways here are a handful of shots by Gail and myself that I hope you find interesting...
